[English]
Introduction: Available evidence indicates that stress increases atherogenic lipids, subsequently raising the risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, little information exists regarding the effect of maternal stress during pregnancy on atherogenic lipids in newborns. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the relationship between maternal stress during pregnancy and atherogenic indices in umbilical cord blood.
Materials and Methods: A total of 384 mother-newborn pairs living in Sabzevar were included in this cross-sectional study. The mothers’ stress levels during pregnancy were evaluated using the Parental Stress Index (PSI) questionnaire. Triglyceride (TG), total cholesterol (TC), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels were measured using enzymatic methods. The low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) level was calculated using Friedewald's formula. Atherogenic indices, including TG/HDL-C, TG/LDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL-C ratios, were calculated based on the lipid levels. Linear regression models were employed to investigate the association between PSI and the atherogenic indices.
Results: There was no significant association between PSI during pregnancy and TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, or non-HDL-C levels. Additionally, we did not find any significant associations between PSI and atherogenic indices, including TG/HDL-C, TG/LDL-C, TC/HDL-C, LDL-C/HDL-C, and non-HDL-C/HDL ratios.
Conclusion: Based on our findings, there is no significant relationship between maternal stress and atherogenic indices in cord blood.
