Background: Oxidative stresses have some role in neuronal pathogenesis in Substantia nigra and induction of Parkinson's disease. It has been reported that Achillea millefolium has antioxidant and nuoropropective effects. In this study, we investigated the effects of Aqueous extract of Achillea millefolium in a Parkinson’s diseases model induced by ICV injection of 6-hydroxydopamin in male rats.
Materials and Methods: In this experimental study, 60 male rats were allocated into 6 groups including Control, Parkinson’s and Parkinson’s groups which treated by different doses of extract. Parkinson’s was induced by i.c.v injection of 6-OHDA. Aqueous extract of Achillea millefolium (1.4 and 2.8 mg/kg) was gavaged by two ways including repeated gavage (14 days before and for 14 days after 6-OHDA injection) and acute gavage (once in day 13 after 6-OHDA injection). Parkinson’s was evaluated using Rotarod and Wire grasping tests on day 14 after 6-OHDA injection.

Background: 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) and tetraethylammonium (TEA) are two potassium channel blockers which have shown that have beneficial effects in treating some neurological disorders such as ataxia, Alzheimer and multiple sclerosis. In this study the effect of acute administration of 4-AP and TEA in the treatment of behavioral symptoms of Parkinsonism induced by the toxin 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) was studied in male rats.
Materials & Methods: 6-OHDA was injected into left medial forebrain bundle (MFB) by stereotaxic surgery using Hamilton syringe. Then, in the third week after surgery, the rats before and after drug application were tested for rotational behavior induced by apomorphine. In the fourth week, Rotarod test was performed in the presence of the blockers for six consecutive days.
Results: 4-AP at doses 200 and 500 µg/kg had no significant effect, but at dose 1000 µg/kg led to a significant improvement of behavioral symptoms of Parkinsonism in the rotation test. On the other hand, the drug decreased motor performance and motor learning in the Rotarod test. TEA at dose 1 mg/kg was ineffective, but at dose 2 mg/kg caused a significant decrease, and at dose 5 mg/kg caused a significant increase in the number of rotations of the Parkinsonian rats. TEA had no effect on the motor learning in the Rotarod test.
Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that 4-AP and TEA, in a dose-dependent manner, weaken some symptoms of Parkinsonism, but worsen some other symptoms.

Background and Purpose: Variation and increase in the levels of inflammatory factors and glycemia are among the major problems of type 2 diabetics. Therefore, the present study was designed to investigate the effect of beta carotene-enriched carrot juice on CRP inflammatory indexes, IL-6 and FBS glucose in diabetics. Methods and Materials: This randomized double blind clinical trial was conducted on 44 type 2 diabetics. Participants based on gender and BMI were assigned into two groups (Group A receiving 200 ml carrot juice enriched with 10 mg beta carotene and Group B receiving normal carrot juice) by randomized stratified sampling. Both groups received 200 ml carrot juice for 8 weeks for lunch (instead of cereals). A 24-hour recall was obtained for 3 consecutive and 6 concomitant days at the beginning and end of the study duration. Also, CRP, IL-6, FBS glucose and serum beta carotene levels were measured in FBS blood sample at the beginning and end of the study duration. The consumption data were fed into Nutritionist IV, and analyzed in SPSS 11.5. Results: Each group consisted of 22 (11 male and 11 female diabetics) participants. There was a significant increase in the levels of beta carotene in group A (111.9±64.9 at the beginning and 72±43.9 at the end) (p=0.02). However, the reduction of CRP in Group A (-996.9±2172.6 at the beginning and -537.3±1412.4 at the end) was not significant (p=0.098). Also, IL-6 reduction in Group A (-0.8±2.1 at the beginning and -0.6±2.4 at the end) was not significant (p=0.085). FBS glucose was also not examined in the present study. Conclusion: Daily consumption of carrot juice enriched with 10 mg beta carotene for eight weeks caused an improvement in the levels of serum antioxidants including beta carotene in type 2 diabetics, with no significant effects on serum glucose and inflammatory indexes.
