Introduction: Sjogren-Larsson Syndrome (SLS) is a recurrent autosomal recessive disorder characterized by three main symptoms including ichthyosis, mental retardation, dysplasia, or spastic tetraplegia. However, other symptoms such as cognitive deficits, delayed speech and seizures were frequently observed. Because of these overlap symptoms, these syndromes are categorized as unknown and rare disease. High-through put technologies such as whole exome sequencing (WES) solved many of these unknown diseases. In this study, we used WES and introduced a family with SLS from Sabzevar – Khorasane Razavi- Iran. Materials and Methods: Using WES, we sequenced all exons and then analyzed the annotation file. We segregated variant in other family members to confirm the candidate gene using PCR and Sanger sequencing. Results: Our data showed that mutation in ALDH3A2 with c.943C>T pathogenic variant causes SLS syndrome in this family. Conclusion: The advent of WES improve the ability of diagnosis in a huge number of syndromes with overlap symptoms. Nonetheless, most of syndromes do not have a specific treatment and recognizing the cause of syndromes help to families to screen during pregnancies.

Background and aims: Telomeres as noncoding hetrochromatic and protective structures contain hexa-nucleutid repeats with rich in guanine at the end of each chromosomes. These structures are conserved during evolution, and their function depends on their length. In somatic cells, telomeres length decreases by each cell division. Shortening of telomere length lead to cell cycle arrest, chromosomes anomalies and cell death. While, telomere length does not short in germ cells and cancer cell due to high activity of telomerase enzyme. Other factors that influenced the telomere length are: 1) parental age at child's birth, 2) gender, 3) family history of cancer, 4) syndromes, 5) smoking, 6) X-radiation, 7) psychological stress, 8) alcohol consumption and 9) improper eating habits. Therefore, we aimed in this review, to discuss the role of telomere length in male germ cells.Materials and Methods: For this review, all relevant information were collected via databases including PubMed and Google Scholar during the period 1965-2016.Results: Normal size of the sperm telomere can be considered as an indicator of semen quality, ability to fertilize and result in formation of good quality embryo and pregnancy. Conclusion: Examination of telomeric structure especially telomere length could provide a new insight for our understanding of the etiology of human infertility.

Introduction: Today, heavy metals and organic compounds such as dyes are among the most dangerous pollutants that have entered surface and groundwater and threaten human health. The aim of this study was to investigate the removal of reactive orange 3R dye and chromium by adsorption separately and simultaneously activated carbon.
Materials and Methods: In this study, Sycamore carbon modified with NH4Cl was used to remove contaminants. Effect of variables such as pH (2-9), adsorbent concentration (0.5-1-0 g/L), pollutant concentration (10-50 mg/L) and contact time (2-40 minutes) on dye and chromium removal (simultaneously and separately) were calculated. Freundlich and Langmuir adsorption isotherm models and kinetics were also investigated.
Results: The results of this study showed that activated carbon at pH = 4, 0.4 g/L adsorbent at 15 min contact time has the best removal conditions for both paint and chromium contaminants. Under optimal conditions, activated carbon was able to remove 72% of chromium and 84% of dye separately and 59% of chromium and 67% of dye simultaneously in solution at a concentration of 25 mg/L. The study of adsorption isotherms also showed that the experiments were more consistent with the Freundlich model. The absorption kinetics follows Pseudo-second order equations.
Conclusion: According to the results, this adsorbent has a good performance in separate and simultaneous removal of paint and chromium and can be used to treat wastewater containing organic and inorganic contaminants.

Objectives Phenol is known as a toxic and carcinogen compound in the environment. It also produces unpleasant taste and odor in water reservoirs. In this study, the efficiencies of modified and conventional rice husk ashes as low-cost adsorbents were compared regarding phenol removal from aqueous solutions. Methods This study is an interventional laboratory research in which, at first carbonized rice husk was prepared at a temperature of 450°C. Then, to improve rice husk ash adsorption capacity, NH4CL was used for its modification. Then, the effects of physiochemical factors (pH, contact time, phenol concentration and adsorbent dose) on phenol removal were studied. Results Findings showed that the phenol removal by modified and conventional rice husk ash was 94.85% and 52.8%, respectively. The adsorption process for both adsorbents followed Freundlich isotherm (R2≥ 0. 99) and the pseudo-second order model (R2>0.99). Maximum adsorption capacity based on Langmuir model for the modified and conventional husk rice ashes were 66.6 mg/g and 4.7 mg/g, respectively. Conclusion Results indicated that efficiency of modified husk rice ash was more than that of the conventional type in phenol removal, causing less adsorbent consuming in the industrial treatment plants. Therefore, because of its availability and easy modification, it can be used in water and wastewater technology for phenol removal.

Background and purpose: Previous studies have shown conflicting results regarding to the relationship between shift work and lipid disorders. This study has investigated correlation between shift work and serum lipid.
Methods and Materials: An analytical cross sectional study was performed on a total of 2100 workers of Polyacryl Iran Company in 2013. The relationship between shift work, biochemical parameters, blood pressure and fasting blood sugar were investigated. SPSS (19) was used for data analysis. Comparisons of quantitative and qualitative variables were performed using, a one-way analysis variance (ANOVA) and Chi 2 tests respectively. The significance level defaults to 0.05.
Results: Total cholesterol average in 3-rotating shift workers (10/32 ± 50/171) was lower than total cholesterol average in the day-shift workers (19/34 ± 46/178) and 2-rotating shift workers (59/35 ± 15/178). ANOVA revealed a significant correlation between total cholesterol and shift work (p<0.001). The prevalence of total cholesterol ≥ 200 mg per dL was 25, 23.7 and 18.6% in day-shift, 2-rotating shift and 3-rotating shift workers respectively. Chi-square test showed that this is a significant difference (p<0.01).
Conclusion: This study was shown that total cholesterol and its prevalence was higher among 3-rotating shift workers than day workers and 2-rotating shift workers. So this study emphasizes on the importance of metabolic risk factors measurement among shift workers and prevent from this risk factors.

Background & Objectives: Cr(IV) is a toxic heavy metal with dangerous effects on health and environment and is discharged through industrial effluents. The main aim of the current study was to determine the efficiency of natural zeolite on removal Cr(IV) from aqueous solutions. Materials & Methods: Following the chemical modification of Zeolite, the study variables including pH (2-10), adsorbent dosage (2-20 g/L), reaction time (5-150 min) and Cr(IV) concentration (10-50) were optimized according to the one at the time experimental design. The correlation of obtained data with conventional isotherms and kinetics were also studied. Results: In optimum pH 2, reaction time of 30 min and adsorbent dosages of 8 g/L, the most removal efficiency of 99.53% was observed for initial Cr(IV) concentration of 10 mg/L. The Freundlich isotherm and pseudo –second order kinetics were better fitted to the findings. Conclusions:According to findings of current study in lab scale, it can be concluded that natural Zeoliite can be considered as an efficient and cost effective alternative on treatment of effluents containing Cr(IV).

Background & Objectives:Urolithiasis is a worldwide problem. Kidney stones have different chemical components. Calcareous stones are still by far the most common nephroliths accounting to more than 80% of stones. In Iranian folk medicine, many plants are used for treatment of kidney stones. In the present study, effect oral treatment of Allium porrum L. seeds hydro-methanolic extract on number of calcium oxalate crystals was studied in ethylene glycol-induced kidney stone in male rats.
Materials and Methods: Hydro-methanolic extract of plant at doses of 100, 200 and 300 mg/kg were prepared. Crystallization of calcium oxalate was induced by adding ammonium chloride and ethylene glycol in drinking water for 3 and 35 days, respectively. Control group was treated by drinking water. Experimental groups were treated by plant extract at different doses for 35 days, in drinking water. After 38 days, animals were anesthetized by either and blood sampling was done by heart. Liver and left kidney were removed, weighted and put in buffered formaldehyde. Specimens were prepared for histological studies and stained by H&E staining method. Number of calcium oxalate crystals and serum parameters were measured.
Results: The present results showed that treatment of extract decreased kidney coefficient, number of crystals in kidney sections, serum aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, creatinine levels, while increased serum total protein level in treated experimental animals in comparison with control group.
Conclusion: The plant could be as a good candidate to prevent formation of calcium oxalate crystals in kidney.

Background:There are many chemicals in Portland cement including crystalline Silica. Workers’ exposure to cement airborne particles containing Free Crystal Silica may cause some serious diseases. This study was carried out to evaluate Free Crystal Silica particle concentration in the workers’ breathing zone in a cement factory in the Khorasan Razavi province.Materials and Method:The concentration of free Crystal Silica of respirable cement particles was evaluated on 42 sample of workers in different sections of a cement factory in the Khorasan Razavi province in 2018. Sampling of respirable particles was conducted based on standard method of MDHS101/2 recommended by NIOSH, using a personal sampling pump, a cyclone and a filter. Filters were weighed using an accurate microbalance with one microgram precision. Filter was analyzed by XRD method for determination of free crystalline silica. Results:The mean workers’ exposure to cement respirable particles was 3.75±4.09 mg/m3 and the average concentration of free silica in cement respirable particles was 0.12±0.3 mg/m3 in all studied sections. On average, 69 percent of workers were exposed to free silica higher than OEL. Maximum average of exposure to free silica (0.54 mg/m3) was observed in stone crushing section and the minimum average exposure was observed in Raw mill section (0.03 mg/m3).Conclusions:Workers exposure to respirable cement particles and free crystalline silica in respirable particles were higher than national and international exposure limits. There is a relationship between temperature and respirable particle concentration. Regarding high exposure of workers to free crystalline silica respirable particle concentration.

Purpose: Epilepsy, as a plastic change lead to hyperexcitability and structural change. Kindling is the process of repetitive subconvulsive electrical or chemical stimulation induced synaptic and circuit alterations. Lateral hypothalamus (LH) contains the main constellation of orexinergic neurons involved in sleep and waking and even excitability with high numbers of receptors in hippocampus. Thus, we investigate the effect of LH inactivation on kindling development and kindling induced hippocampal neuronal population. Method: Pentylenetetrazol (PTZ; 45 mg/kg) was used to induce chemical kindling every 48 h up to 13 injections, intraperitoneally. Three consecutive 4 or 5 seizure stages were criteria for kindling. Lidocaine (2%) was injected stereotaxically into right LH, 0.5 h prior to PTZ administration. Nissl staining was used to demonstrate neuronal population survival in CA3 and hilar regions of hippocampus. Results: LH inactivation prevented PTZ kindling development. Although kindling increased neuronal dispersion in CA3 and hilar regions, LH inactivation was unable to reduce the dispersion. Moreover, kindling did not affect neuronal survival in CA3 and hilus, qualitatively. Conclusion: It is concluded that kindling induced structural changes is to some extent independent of kindling development and it is not prevented by kindling inhibition through LH inactivation.
