Background: Recent research has shown that an Advanced Oxidation Process known as Persulfate/UV, has a high capability in removing of persistent organic pollutants. Given that the advantages of this process are limited production of harmful byproducts and strong ability for degradation of persistent organic thus it seems this process be also suitable for disinfection of municipal wastewater treatment plant effluents.
Materials & Methods: After collection, the effluent samples were transferred to the lab. Then the disinfection experiments were carried out in a 1 L sterile reactor with 0.5 L of sample and various doses were injected. The direct method was used to measure the microbial populations (thermo-tolerant coliforms).
Results: The result of this research indicated that Persulfate and UV irradiation cannot be able to meet the needs of thermo tolerant coliforms inactivation, but simultaneous using of them (Persulfate/UV) could inactivated approximately 5 logs thermo-tolerant coliforms (Persulfate dose <30 mM). While Persulfate (without UV irradiation) even with 300 mM could inactivated less than 3 logs thermo-tolerant coliforms.
Conclusion: The results of this research show UV irradiation has a strong synergistic effect on persulfate disinfection efficiency. Due to the restriction of the use of sulfur compounds in wastewater treatment, it seems that the use of UV irradiation with less amounts of persulfate can largely improve this restriction and significantly reduce the economic and environmental impact of traditional disinfectants.

Background: In previous studies, pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines were shown to increase after physical activity. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of different carbohydrate-protein supplementation ratio on plasma levels of IL-6 and IL-10 after high-intensity exercise in healthy young females. Materials and Methods: Twenty seven volunteer females aged 20-25 year divided into three groups: 1-placebo, 2- carbohydrate-protein (3:1), and carbohydrate-protein (4:1). After 12 h fasting, subjects have standard breakfast and then completed anaerobic test at 10 AM. Subjects received one of supplementations pre-, post-, and 2 h after test. Blood samples were taken before, immediately and 2 h after exercise. Data were analyzed by MANOVA and repeated measure ANOVA. Statistical significance was accepted at the 0.05 level. Results: IL-6 and IL-10 increased significantly after test and then 2 hours after test IL-6 decreased and IL-10 remained high in all groups. IL-10 and IL-6 cytokines didn’t differ between groups. Although, IL-10 was higher and IL-6 was lower in carbohydrate-protein (4:1) group than placebo group at two hours after exercise but those were not statistically significant. Conclusion: carbohydrate-protein (4:1 ratio) supplementation resulted to some extent in improvements in cytokine responses at 2 hours after high-intensity exercise test.

Background: Schiff bases have attracted great attention in recent years due to their antioxidant, antiviral and antibacterial properties. Antioxidants prevent free radical reactions and leading to decrease in cardiovascular disease, cancers, etc. Bacteria exploited variety of defense systems so they can resist against antibiotics. Therefore, it is necessary to develop antimicrobial factors with more effective mechanisms. In present study, antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of copper Schiff base complex N’-N1 dipirodoxil-1-2 diaminobenzene has been studied. Materials and methods: After Synthesis of Schiff base complex, evaluation of antiradical activity of this complex was performed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH),2, 2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) and hydroxyl (OH ̊) tests. In order to study antimicrobial properties, disk diffusion test was done using bacteria. Results: Schiff base complex acted as scavengerof 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical (DPPH) (IC50 = 0.1 mg/ml), 2, 2’-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) (IC50 = 0.11 mg/ml) and hydroxyl radicals (OH ̊) (IC50 = 0.14 mg/ml). Antimicrobial effects of this complex against two bacteria were seen at the concentration of 250 µg/ml.Conclusion: Findings of this study indicate that copper Schiff base complex has antioxidant activity and in antimicrobial test Staphylococcus aureus is more sensitive than Escherichia coli.
